Going the Distance: the Sport of Competitive Trail Driving by Linda Gasparini Even before I purchased my first horse--a Barb mare—when I was a young adult, I was drawn to explore deep into the far reaches of thickly wooded tracts. So it was only natural that when my wanderlust was upgraded from long hikes to even longer carriage drives, it led me to a sport that embraced this constant quest to explore new trails. The sport is distance driving or, more accurately, Competitive Trail Driving (CTD), and for those of us who just can’t seem to get enough time in the woods with our equine companions, it’s the perfect pursuit. |

by Susan Evans Garlinghouse Whenever you hear the comment, "Well, that's what we've been feeding for forty years and all our horses have done just fine on it", the odds are they're talking about alfalfa. In most parts of the country, it's cheap, is the most common hay available and it just looks like great feed---bright green, leafy and the horses just gobble it like candy. If it looks that good, and the horses like it that much, it must be the best available feed...right? Click on the title for the rest of the article! |
Tip of the Day!

If you would like to cross the finish line looking like the person your horse would be proud of, I would urge you to do the following: 1. Three days before each ride, you need to eat at least 60% of your meals as complex carbohydrates. 2. During a ride, constantly take in fluid, electrolytes and simple carbohydrates. 3. Immediately after the ride, have a meal of complex carbohydrates. 4. Avoid fat like the plague. |
